Proposal :

The project aims to promote Bang-Kra-Jao port and nearby community to be a tourist attraction for its conservation agriculture area along Chao-Praya-river. The existing site is lack of identity and organization of space, disorganization of vegetation on the pathway and promenade.

It is a port that provides additional boat taxi which will connect the Chao-Praya-river to the local canal, by doing this it will create a route for tourists and locals to access to their destinations with a different mode of transportation. The tourists will travel by this canal taxi to big holiday market inside bang-Krao-Jao with the much better experience of traditional Thai culture. The port also serves a community Boat making center, to create a job for the local and at the same create an identity for the port as it is the conservation site.

Design
I am interested in exoskeleton structure in animal, where it would support and protect and animal body, with this structure it would create a continuous space with no interruption of the columns. The Dragon fly’s wing has inspired to adapt as the structure pattern, the way that the structure has the main supporting beam and transfer loads to others branches.

The pattern of the DNA has been used for the pattern of the porosity. The idea of using it’s as a pattern inspired from its structure of double helix. With the DNA, it could a symbol of life and the preservation of plant and green space in this area. The arrangement of the pattern is according to the light quality that would require for different programs in the port.

Cities after Independence day (Jay)

It has been 64 years since India got its freedom and being independence from British Empire. It was a undoubtedly the suffering period of Indian people. But after India got its independence is another story. From my point of view, after India got its independence the city had a conflict of how the city going to move on. One choice is to create a new city in which of course anti every system which related to old British system or to follow the footstep that the English had prepared from them. After I visited Old Delhi, New Delhi and Chandigarch, a lot contradiction and contrary between those cities are very obvious in term of how the city was planned and how people react to those individual existing built environment. As in Old Delhi, Chandi Chowk, the city where the British was constructed. It was totally chaotic city. Initially, the city was planned with such a small amount population, but as the population has increasing, the landscape could not control the people behavior anymore. On the other hand, the New Delhi also constructed and planned by the British. The style of the building is neo classical; the rich in decorative and ornamentation show the power of the imperial period of the British. It is the idea of follow what is already good and use it to benefit the country. The landscape in New Delhi is better than the Old Delhi, with the entire wall surrounding the buildings and houses. It is clearly show the different of class of people. The road is organized.   Moreover, the other attempt of trying to create a new city, which perhaps the attempts of anti British imperial system and show to the world that India has come to the new era with the new power of Indian people and no longer under the Crown rule. Chandigrach, the modern city planned by Le Corbusier by using the international style. The characteristic of the modernism which is the honest of architecture, the reveal of structure and the raw of the materials: concrete, glass, steel.  The city has changed the way people behaviors, no more chaotic trafficking, less horn blowing, and jaywalking on the road unlike in Old Delhi.
To sum up, I personally think that both New Delhi and Chandigrach had achieved their goal of trying to create a new system of order and organization to the Indian, if you compared with Chandi Chowk. But of course, Ones would want their city that represent their own culture, art, architecture. But it is also undeniable that the British system in governing the city and some culture still have been influencing India. Since British Empire had colonized India for such a lone period of time.

Final Manifesto

One can not denied that the acknowledgment of the architectural history affect our architectural design today. The linkage still strongly bond till today. From the studying From
Ancient architecture, Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Classicism, Modernism to post-modernism, ones can begin to understand architecture transformation through time. The factor that influences in the movement, the belief, and the style are various: the society, technology, world war (propaganda). Generally speaking, studying history would be a lot easier if we have a person who can live for 800 year, then we would not have to guess anything, because the facts are right in front of us. However, that is impossible and that why are here using architectures, painting, sculpture as our historical reference.
I divided my manifesto in to four parts: “Are we just now modern”, “when ornamentation is crime”, “counterattack on modernism” and “recycle of history”. The rebellion in architecture is not something new. The new style emerge by bring the classical elements to further its efficient(Renaissance). Then, others came up with more breaking through and more expressive shape and from (Baroque). Then, After a century, they starting to combining them together (age of enlightenment),beauty and function. Then, after another century, the Sliver prince, Walter Gropius, came up and talk about “starting from zero”(Wolfe,8). He is as a bomb, which destroying the classicalism. He said that those ornamentation and massive decorative facade are unnecessary and create a classes and level of people in society. During the WWII, a lot of complication occurred, the idea had been sent worldwide. After the war, it became International style which first introduce in European, then American. The elements and slogan have been introduce to people by Le Corbusier ‘s principles, Mies Van de Rohe “Less is more”etc. The common elements of the modernism are clear facade, white color, glasses, steel expose structure,I-beam. Some people adore it, some are not. That give birth to post modernism emerge. The arguments by both modernism and early post modernism accuse each other ‘s notion and belief. Then, the second generation modernists, who are more expressive in shape, and concern more about site context matter. This period is a transformation period from late Modernism to high post modernism.
In my opinion of what causes that emerge of the new style is perfectness. The experiment of form, fusion in architecture, those development aims for the perfectness in beauty and uniqueness. Naturally, when something reach its maximum climate, it is start get bored by the audiences and it slowly loss attraction, so does the architecture. That period is when the new movement, the new style are becoming to the attention. There will always have some people who want to conserve the old idea, the conventional style which it is a original. They deem the original as the most perfect architecture, such as golden ratio, symmetry and proportion, they try to preserve it. As a result, there we are again at the age of restoration, bring back the old classical elements. History is a recycle. It will come back, in different form, but it still live.
Moreover, It is hard to judge whether this movement is bad or good, because we are living in the different time in different society, ritual, belief and political situation. And those things are the contributors to the architecture at different period of time. In other words, ones can see the architecture and could interpret what is going on during the period, incase of other documentation are not existed.

Age of Enlightment

During the age of enlightenment , everything from art and religion to science and mathematics was questioned, including architecture. 18 century is in the age of enlightenment, people want to bring back the classical elements. It is a fusion of some of  modern and classical architecture to create a simple form work with its beauty: simple geometry, arrangement of symmetry and proportion. However, its aim is to maintain the a sense of extreme beauty and exquisiteness. Also era of enlightenment referring to Neoclassicism. An example of architecture in this era is called Church of Saint Geneviève in Paris was built in 1755. It is bring the element from Greek and Roman and refine it to more extreme elegance as if in Renaissance period. It is a combination of age of faith and age of reason together create such a extremely elegance architecture.
The attempt of bring back all those classical element, could trigger the idea of modernism to be born.Because the gap between the high-class people and low class people is wide, which is expressed in architectures in that era.

    Architecture as a Symbol

In the war, when the invaders got a victory, they burnt historical artifacts, such as Bibles, Architectures. They want to erase that particular culture or belief out of the history. Then, They would build their new architectures or sculptures to celebrate or to emphasize the glory. Architecture can be the symbol of powerful nations, fallen nations or it can be rebellious of other architecture. Frankly speaking, I deem Barque architecture as a statement that the new era has come. Because Baroque architecture is initially use for representing the power of the Catholic Church.

The insurrection of modernism is post modernism. When modernism introduce the idea of function and forms without the ornamentation, it raised the post modernism idea. If we were to compare Renaissance  and Baroque with Modernism and post modernism. Renaissance would be modernism and Baroque would be post modernism. The idea the derived from Renaissance to Baroque is the use of the classical elements. Baroque architecture adds more ingredient to the receipt. The classical elements used in the Baroque architecture is more expressive in ornamentation and arrangement. Indeed, They are emphasize in more three dimension, which dynamic movement as if in Baroque painting.

One of the great master of Baroque architecture was Borromini. His totally different in architectural style even differ from Bernini, who gave birth to Baroque style. "He had been sent to destroy architecture" "Borromni rejected the serene conception of architecture as a reflection of the proportions of the human body" (Watkin,290)which those ideas are used by all classical architects. He also said that "he architecture was base on nature, Michelangelo and the antique"(Watkin,291).

I think that his rebellion of classical elements is shown on his architectures. As can be shown on S. Ivo della (1642-60). Looking at the plan, we can see that it use two equal-side triangle to construct the dome.  Also it creates the star shape form, which symbolize wisdom. In the centre of the dome, it creates a hexagon shape which is flanked by circles, those circles are crating the three apes. Combining the elements together create a very unique from. On the contrary, in Renaissance, the construction usually use the Golden ratio, circle with rectangle and vitruius man to construct.

From here we can the see that even though Baroque architecture use the same element used in the Renaissance and Classical architecture, the way the those element are arranged is change in to more expressive symbol.

    When architecture neglects God.

From Egyptian architecture, we can see the language in the architecture are use to worship God. It is not build for normal people, but it is built for kings and priests to be able to access. Therefore, we can see the scale of the architectures are gigantic. For instance, Temple of Queen Hatshepsut , the tomb was installed into the mountain, to create a scared place which normal people can not be access. The architecture were concern the transition of meaning in architecture. In Greek and Roman, the architectures use to represent god and worship the king's greatness or deliver the message of the greatness of the rulers to the public. For example, Parthenon was built for dedication to Greek goddess, Athena. Also The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol ofAncient Greece democracy.

From classical pagan architecture translate into domestic architecture by the purposes and function changes. For instance, the Villa Rotunda in Vincenza, still contains the classical element, symmetrical composed of geometric shapes. The square plan with four entrances/exits on each side and a circular dome in the middle are evidence of the translation of the classical religious architecture in to domestic architecture. The meaning that change through the architecture can be compare with the Pantheon. The use of light in Christianity to represent God, which the oculus of the pantheon is represented that. On the other hand, Villa Rotunda's oculus is only built for a function purpose to receive light.

Another example is Compidoglio. It was built on Trojan Forum of the Romans, which build for a monumental complex. Compidoglio was built to restore glory and make the site to be the heart of Christian empire. This is a example of how the architecture use to restore the greatness of God. But Also, it is domestic architecture, humanism is the main concern in architecture. If we look that the whole site we can see that it is a space a time square for people to gathering. The building for human, we can see the change in scale and the function that install to the building.

To sum up, the purposes of construction in architectures have changed. We are no longer interest in the architecture for God, but we are now focusing on the architecture for humanity, where function is the main interest of architecture. Indeed, the transition in the elements in classical architecture are still present in domestic architecture the function of them are changed, adapted or being ignoring.

    Human scale and architecture

Most commonly used scale in architecture is based on human scale. Since 1487, when the Vitruvian man was invented by Leonado Da Vinci, had been widely used by classical and renaissance architects. One of the renaissance architects,Filippo Brunelleschi who bring classical elements to his attention, proportion, order, symmetry, arrangement are very vital element used in his architectures. In other words, he bring history to his use. However, Brunelleschi not just simply design a architecture like a Classical architecture. He chanlleging it with technology and new form. As shown in Santa Maria del Fiore is the first dome structure constructed in that period.

On the other hand, Le Corbusier introduce modular man to the modernism. The adaptation of the vitrue man in to this modular man one can see the transformation change through time, from the classical element where massive ornamentation and decorative facade to modernism where clear surface, and from follow its function. Even though he stressed that modernism is neglect all the classical element and start from zero.

Even though Le corbusier try so hard to drive away from all the ornaments on the facade, because he want to stop separation in level of people, he believe that every body should be equal. He still refer to the vituious man and create a modular man which use to make proportion and symmetry .

Opposite to Robert Venturi, the post modernist, where he urges that modernism is not satisfy human needs and it stucked with all the phrase like less it more and all the principle created which are the limitation to the architecture. And it suggested that the architecture should be read in many dimension ann have many layers for the reader to interpreted and create complexity and contradiction which make a value to the architectures which he deems to be efficient, the post modernism. He used the history to go against within itself. As we can see in his article like complexity and contradiction. Another example of how he got away with all the proportion and symmetry of form, and pay more attention to the expressiveness of the building is shown in the Duck house.

    New movement ? Bigness

Modernist cares about function with the simplest forms without decorative facades. Also, they do not care about the site context. On the other hand, Post-modern style brings context to their attention, their architecture deliver the message to the public by using architecture such as decorative facade etc.

Rem Koolhaas consider mass-produce building such as shophouse, suburbia etc as a junk space, space that not incorporate with site, you can put it in any location. It does not matter where the building located. His solution to the Junk space is "Bigness" He said "Bigness is ultimate architecture. It seems incredible that the size of a building alone embodies an ideological program, independent of the will of its architecture "For example, CCTV building does not cooperate with its site; however, it does not matter because the building is already became the context itself, because of its bigness.

Personally, I adore his break through thinking and his terms, like Bigness or S M L XL. When you are in a gigantic building, you are being attracted to its bigness so much that you could be ignoring some primary elements or contexts of the site. For instance, the light affect to the building, or the surrounding of the building itself. Indeed, being big does not always has the upsides. The downside of being too big is that the building to become hard to control in term of both construction method and effects to the people inside of the building. With more advance in technology like parametric program etc., it could change the ways the architect designs architectures. Bigness is primary break-through idea of architectural design. In the near future, we might found the new source of architectural movement, WHO KNOWS.

Architecture without meaning is no value!

The value of the architecture is the hidden meaning. To simplify it or to take it away, devalue the architecture. Indeed, modernism try to minimize the architecture without concerning the context. All they care about how simple the building is and how the architecture like it. Personally, they are trying to set up the format for what is called a good architecture and what is not. Art supposed to be many dimensions for the viewers to think as well as architecture. That is what post-modern architecture does.

For example, This is the building by John Nuwell "Cartier Foundation". You may the notice the reflection of the facade contain the meaning. Some part of the glass facade has a void. Thus the ones who see the reflection doubt the meaning what is real, What is Hyperreal? Those thing make that architecture a interesting to look. Not just straight forward architecture.

These a example of the simple object, that had been giving value to it. It is the fountain. The art work by Marcel Duchamp. He is try question what is art and what is not art. By using every day object, and exhibit in the exhibition. People cannot denied that it is not art, because here it is exhibited in the room and treated like art.

Post Modern, Modern What 's next ?!

Language is the method of human communicationeither spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional. Representation is the way the language represent itself.  You cannot said that this language is bad or good. Meaning change and transform of language from one meaning to other meaning is occurred through time. Architecture is like a language. It could transformable and adaptable. Change in architecture From Egyptian to Greek and Roman, Post modern to Modern. It is like a change in language. It is still language with try to communicate to people in different way and different element.

Post-modern being from the 1950s, however it is not yet a style until 1970s.
"Postmodern architecture has also been described as "neo-eclectic", where reference and ornament have returned to the facade, replacing the aggressively unornamented modern styles." In Post-modern, according to Venturi "Architects can bemoan or try to ignore them (referring to the ornamental and decorative elements in buildings) or even try to abolish them, but they will not go away. Or they will not go away for a long time, because architects do not have the power to replace them (nor do they know what to replace them with)."

Ornamental and decorative is necessary for communication. It give the meaning of the building to the public There is no one meaning. Communication can be interpreted in many way so does architecture. The good architecture for post-modern should have many dimensions and layering of meanings.

Peter Eisenman said "Loss in Integrity" of nowadays architecture".

    Modernism try to present function.
On the other hand, according to Modernists Post modern is "the democratization of the culture under industrialism" "Post-Modern is aimless, anarchic, amorphous, self-indulgent, inclusive, horizontally structured and aims for popular".

QUESTIONING WHETHER MODERNISM A GOOD LIVING PLACE?

Mies said "LESS IS MORE" OR "LESS IS BORE"

(1951 Mies van der Rohe designed Farnsworth House)

    The simplicity is the best?

May be, when the architect force his architecture to be what he want so much, in this case force himself  with phrase "Less is more".  Is it good for living? Is it comfortable? Personally, I feel that Modern house is not lively.  In the movie in 1967, Play time. It is a mock-modernism film which show how modernism affect and force people to be the way they were.  People are dress the same way in the same color tone. It is story of a man who unfamiliar with the place and how he react to them. His behavior create compare and contrast between one who knows the place and one who did not. The building use glass facade and in rectangular shape. All the geometry shape of the building, the rectangular interior decoration with concrete, all place looks rigid and not lively. Even though the building look manifest but undoubtedly not comfortable to live as if you live in your non-modern house. On the other hand, and I would feel more comfort live in non-mordern home. It feel that there is no limitation or so much program that force habitant to live.

    PHOTOGRAPH AS A ROLE

Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream.
During the post-war, The architects believe that with better design, it will make you a better life. The architecture can change the world.
From post-modern to modern architecture, photographs have play a significant role in the movement. It is used as a tool to delivery the message to the public. Since after the world war, people seek a better life, The American dream. It was first expressed by James Truslow Adams in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.”
Julius always remind us about the beauty of nature. As in the beginning of the movie, when he walking around the park and said “ This is my God”. He also encourage young architect to concern about it. Photograph is not always true, it is an one ’s eye behind the rectangular object, or in other word, it is just an moment that captured by photographers. It is depended on them what to show or what not to show. In this case, Julius want people to see architecture with the landscape. The landscape has an affect on the house, and the photograph are used to tell the story of it. Moreover, to show that architecture could help people to achieve have a better life by having a better living place. For instance, the famous photo from Julius which publish in the American modern magazine “ a shot in the dark” on his case study # 22, the house of Buck and Carlotta Stahl. It is a picture that set attention the American people in many different way and it bring architecture in attention that the time. (1945-1960, at time we building the rocket to the moon). It shows that picture of a house an wide city view of LA.
Without Shulman the modern architecture would not be the way it is today, who’s know!
